welcome back Rich Holdsworth...now opening Rubbersoulbicycles

Joining Fresno's several other fine bicycle shops will be Rich Holdsworth, now opening Rubbersoulbicycles.  A personable, compassionate and competitive merchant, Rich has a long history locally in the cycling business, most recently through about five years ago, when he sold Cyclopath to corporate cephalopod Performance.  He then submerged for the duration of his non-compete clause with that North Carolina based mass marketer, still open in Rich's old shop at Blackstone and Sierra.

I ran into Rich while fetching some sandwiches for lunch today, down the strip mall on the northwest corner of Blackstone and Nees, whose corner and anchor store for so many years was Tri-Sport, founded by Ben Medrano, and most recently run by our good friend and Team member Kevin Slater, now operating for over a year in his River View center store located a barber shop and Mexican restaurant away from 2007 Central Valley Classic primary sponsor Bentley's Fresh Market and Bistro. Rich has leased and remodeled the old Tri-Sport space.  Alas, I did not see that the decor includes a parrot.(What DID happen to Zooie?)

We're a fortunate town of our size to have beyond these shops the recently-expanded Herb Bauer's Cycling, at Blackstone and Escalon, not to mention the two locations for Stevens Cyclery, their original crammed shop at Palm and Shields, plus their brand new and more spacious location at Willow and Nees right in front of the bike trail.  Cycle Path also continues a smaller operation at Cedar and Herndon.

Rubbersoulbicycles hasn't even formally opened. There is much merchandise and stocking to go.  Rich advises he'll have a "soft opening" next week, a grand opening sometime following, and most likely also a special by invitation holiday event in December.  He has given some barber a bit of business, as his ponytail has vanished, such that I didn't quite recognize him at first, though he surely knew me.  During 2001 I bought my original Cannondale 600 road bike at the old Cyclo Path, and that's where we purchased Kathy's original Bianchi Giro.  Of course, the years pass, aluminum gets replaced by carbon fiber, 9-speed rear derailleurs by 10-speed, and other refinements.

Rich already has a stock of KHS, a good Taiwanese import bike, ridden by many of you past and present as a loaner bike.  I also saw a few Kestrel, the carbon fiber roadbike, not the nifty weather meter I recently got as a gift. (See: http://www.kestrelmeters.com/; REI also carries a model or two of these gadgets, along with all their mountaineering, hiking, camping and even, cycling gear.)  Beyond that, Rich is not quite sure which lines of roadbikes he will carry, but he mentioned Lemond, Seven, Calfee, etc.

Anyway, Rich's new shop should be a great resource, expanding our local options. Welcome back Rich!

    Hey Everybody!

We would like to thank Dr.Allan Birnbaum, for his lovely article about the soon to be opening of Rubber Soul Bicycles,on the corner of Blackstone and Nees. The article is fairly accurate except for the store not being opened by Rich Holdsworth, but is being opened by Mr. Ben Medrano, who is looking forward to getting back into the business he so dearly missed, and Rich will be work the front of the store.Rich will be looking forward to doing what he likes most, which is being of service to the local bicycling community. We would again like to thank Dr. Birnbaum for his article and endorsement, but I felt it necessary to get the record straight as to the ownership of the new business.

The store will open for business on a limited bases starting Thursday October 11, 2007,if you would like to call for store hours our new phone number 435- BIKE (2453),our Grand Opening party planned for the evening of Wednesday,December 5,2007.We hope you can attend! There will be music, food and holiday cheer,to go along withwhat will be a full line of bicycles and bicycle accessories, and yes Zoe the big blue chicken will be there on his perch.

    Thank You,

    Ben Medrano, Rich Holdsworth

welcome back Rich and Ben...and Zoe!!

Thank you Ben, for the more complete explanation regarding Rubbersoulbicycles.  Just as Mike and Sue can attest that the best way to get to the top of Kaiser Pass is a good tandem team, the same certainly can hold true for a mercantile venture. And, just before I go to my Fresno Audubon Society meeting tonight, thank you also for the ornithological update!

Ornithological update... YOU crack me up!

Question:  Does calling Zoe a 'chicken' indicate some gender confusion????

     thanks

    by proxy, welcome back Craig

Craig Calfee, that is.  I dropped by Rubbersoulbicycles for a few minutes today, said hello not just to Rich, but also to Ben Medrano.  Merchandise continues to arrive, for display in a store that looks lighter, brighter and airier than the old Tri-Sport.  They will definitely be a dealer for Santana, who makes some very good tandems:

but especially for the world's ONLY maker of bamboo-framed bicycles, Calfee of Santa Cruz.  OK, so most Calfee riders, such as Jim Pitton, get a carbon-fiber model, like the Luna Pro, Tetra Pro or Dragonfly:

    Cervelo

My fuzzy memory seems to recall that the makes of roadbikes the shop will carry also include Cervelo, being ridden this year by U.S. Time Trial Champion David Zabriskie.  Of course, the folks over at Herb Bauer Cycling would remind us that next year, DaveZ will be ride for Slipstream-Chipotle, who ride Felt, two of the other makes they carry being Scott and Cannondale.  Rich and Ben will also sell Lemond, Jamis, KHS and Kestrel, and I think Rich also mentioned Seven. The local Trek vendor will remain Tri-Sport, who also carry Specialized, the latter also being sold by Stevens, who likely will remain the local source for Giant, often a "best buy" cycle, and very popular, if you look at my Jesse, Dan, Terry and my wife ride. Orbea and Serotta are some of the other upper end choices at Tri-Sport. Performance is the local source for Fuji.

The long and short of the matter is that anyone looking to re-do their ride for next season can find virtually ANY make locally.
